About the research

ศ. 2018) เมื่อทีม A.E.A.

JUNO Project —

Radiant Project —

Sounding Rocket Research and Development Program

The Sounding Rocket Program at the SPACE AC Institute of Technology, Assumption College, is a student-led initiative grounded in Student Research and Development (SRAD). It advances technical knowledge and develops young people’s engineering capabilities through rocket design, fabrication, and testing.

The program originated in 2018, when Team A.E.A. Sat won the Thailand CanSat Competition 2018 and earned the opportunity to participate in ROSCANSAT in Russia, where the team gained its first experience testing a CanSat using a sounding rocket. Subsequently, the Thailand CanSat and Rocket Competition 2019, which integrated rocket and simulated satellite missions, motivated SPACE AC to pursue continuous research and development in rocket technology. These efforts have produced three major initiatives.

1. JUNO Project — Establishing a Foundation in Student-Developed Rocketry

The JUNO Project developed SPACE AC’s first sugar-propellant sounding rocket in 2021, in collaboration with the Defence Technology Institute (DTI). The project established foundational knowledge in propulsion systems, rocket structures, and engineering test procedures, marking the beginning of a systematic approach to student-led rocket development.

2. Radiant Project — Advancing Rocket Engineering on the International Stage

The Radiant Project developed MANA, a high-performance sounding rocket, for participation in the Spaceport America Cup 2024, in collaboration with DTI and Mahidol University. The initiative expanded the team’s capabilities in developing larger and more capable rockets while strengthening its understanding of international competition requirements for technical performance and safety. It demonstrated the ability of Thai high school and university students to integrate engineering knowledge into practical aerospace applications.

3. WangChan MK1 & MK2 — From Competition Rockets to Educational Platforms

The WangChan MK1 & MK2 initiative reflects SPACE AC’s transition from developing rockets for competition to creating tools for engineering education. Guided by the principle that “Rocketry must be safe for everyone,” WangChan MK1 was used in the AC × KMUTT Rocket Camp 2025 Operated by DTI, providing young people from across Thailand with opportunities to learn engineering through space-related missions. The initiative also extended educational rocket testing to privately owned sites, emphasizing safety, stakeholder coordination, and compliance with applicable requirements.

WangChan MK2 was subsequently developed to support testing of Team DAEDALUS’s CanSat as part of its preparation for the CanSat Competition 2026, in which the team won first place. The knowledge and experience gained through this development were further translated into the WangChan MK2 Rocket Kit, an educational sounding rocket kit designed to make hands-on engineering learning more accessible to young people and educational institutions. Its learning activities encompass assembly, system integration, testing, and data analysis under appropriate safety procedures and supervision. The kit transforms the achievements of a space-related mission into tangible educational opportunities that can reach a broader community of learners.

The Sounding Rocket Program serves as both a platform for technological research and development and a means of cultivating analytical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and engineering responsibility. Rockets represent more than space exploration; they also embody humanity’s progress through learning and experimentation, turning what once seemed impossible into reality.
